Subcompact cars put you at greater risk

Do you drive a subcompact car, or are you thinking about buying one? Maybe you want to do your part for the environment. Maybe you want a car that is easier to park downtown. Maybe you're looking to cut back on your monthly gasoline costs.

Regardless of your reasons, there is one thing you need to consider: Subcompact cars increase your risks.

This is something that people have speculated about for a long time, but a recent study backed it up. Released in 2019, it claimed that car accidents resulting in fatalities happened around 73% more often than average in subcompact cars.

The suggestion is that the small size alone puts you in greater danger. And researchers did not even cherry-pick the data by comparing subcompact cars to large pickup trucks or semitrucks. They just compared them to the average, which includes small sedans and coupes. Even those were far safer than subcompact cars.

That doesn't mean that manufacturers don't attempt to make these vehicles safer. They have air bags, crumple zones and other modern advancements to keep people safe. But, at some point, it's just about physics. When the accident involves a large vehicle and a small vehicle, more energy gets exerted on the small vehicle. The odds of a fatality go up. The driver has less vehicle around them to keep them safe.

If you get hit by another driver and suffer serious injuries or lose a loved one, no matter what type of car you drive, it is very important to know what legal rights you have to seek compensation for your costs.
