The way you drive at night shouldn’t be the same as the way you drive during the day. Once the sun goes down, it’s important to follow these five safety tips:
- Use your headlights: This helps you see the road ahead, while also making your vehicle more visible to others on the road.
- Keep a clean windshield: A dirty windshield promotes nighttime glare, making it more difficult to see when other vehicles are traveling toward you.
- Watch for signs of fatigue: Drowsy driving can cause an accident, so if you feel tired it’s best to pull to the side of the road. Signs of fatigue include yawning, rubbing your eyes and an inability to concentrate on the road.
- Watch for aggressive drivers: Even though you may drive with extra caution at night, others often take the opposite approach. With fewer people on the road, they’re more likely to become aggressive.
- Keep inside lights to a minimum: If you need to turn on an interior light, pull to safety and then do so. Not only can these lights distract you, but they can also do the same to other drivers.
When you do these things you’ll be more confident in your ability to drive safely after the sun goes down.
If another driver causes an accident during the nighttime hours, pull to safety and put on your hazard lights. Don’t get out of your vehicle if you’re in a heavily trafficked area, as this increases the risk of being struck.
